Balmain House

The owners wanted a new family home on a long narrow block sloping steeply down to Sydney Harbour. Council regulations required that the new building respect the form and shape of the original building which in its day had little natural light and was disadvantaged by facing south. Double garaging was designed at the street with wide stairs leading to a paved court yard built one floor down and living areas on the waterfront. In this way all rooms face east to the view or open onto a bright sunny courtyard. A new semi detached cottage was designed in keeping with the streetscape and original form but providing maximum light, accommodation and views.
